The Lions Eye Institute for Transplant and Research (LEITR) has created an innovative, new model in ocular tissue research—the first and only combined eye bank and research institute. The centerpiece of this model is a new 12,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility in Tampa, Florida, that will:

  • Offer high-volume, high-quality human ocular tissue for study, collaboration, and clinical advancements
  • Feature the most up-to-date, cutting edge equipment and research facilities available
  • Establish a dedicated donor screening and consent center
  • Provide multiple collection/preservation centers
  • Create a repository of normal and diseased tissue, combining this tissue with a database of clinical and familial information— the only comprehensive database of its kind
  • Offer research opportunities involving trabecular meshwork, optic nerves, corneas, retinas/RPE, endothelial cells, and other areas
